Punjabi (Gurmukhi: ਪੰਜਾਬੀ) is an Indo-Aryan language with over 125 million speakers worldwide, native to the Punjabi people of the Punjab region in India and Pakistan. The name "Punjabi" comes from "Panj-āb," Persian for "Five Waters," referring to the Indus River's tributaries.
Gurmukhi (Punjabi: ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ) was standardized by Guru Angad (1504–1552) and is the official script of Punjabi in Punjab, India. The Sikh scripture, Guru Granth Sahib, is written in Gurmukhi. Modern Gurmukhi has 35 original letters, 6 additional consonants, and various diacritics for vowels and nasal sounds.
